Chemical Plant Explosion in Seville, Spain, Forces Thousands Indoors

On Tuesday afternoon, a blast at a chemical facility outside Seville caused a fire and forced thousands of people to stay indoors as smoke spread across the region.

The incident took place around 1:20 p.m. at Plainsur, a chemical distributor in Alcalá de Guadaíra. Located southeast of Seville, the warehouse contained materials prone to combustion. Within minutes, emergency alerts went out to nearby households.

Authorities advised roughly 25,000 people living nearby to remain inside, avoid outdoor activity, and shut windows. Some outlets estimate that the total affected population could be over 80,000.

Fire teams from several towns joined forces to control the flames. The Andalusian government responded by declaring a Level 1 emergency, which helped direct regional support to the site.

So far, key updates include:

• Plainsur’s warehouse, which holds chemicals like toluene and ethylene, caught fire after an explosion.
• The smoke plume was large and visible from kilometers away.
• One employee suffered burns, and a firefighter was hospitalized due to fumes.
• Officials urged people with health concerns to be cautious.

“There was a loud noise, and then we saw the black smoke coming up fast. We closed everything and stayed put,” a local resident said.

Investigators have not yet confirmed what triggered the blast, but they are reviewing whether a mechanical issue or chemical instability may be responsible.

Health teams continue to track air conditions in the area, and while no further evacuations are planned, caution remains in place, especially for those with respiratory issues.

Cleanup and safety monitoring are ongoing as officials work to fully assess the damage.
