SpaceX Starship Explodes During Engine Test
SpaceX lost its biggest rocket prototype to an explosion during a ground engine test on Wednesday, June 18. The vehicle, known as Starship Ship 36, was preparing for its next flight when it failed during a routine static fire test at the company’s launch site, Starbase.
At around 11 p.m., engineers began the test by loading fuel and firing engines while keeping the rocket secured to the ground. Just seconds into the procedure, the rocket exploded. Flames and smoke lit up the sky, and people nearby felt the blast.
Fortunately, no one was hurt. SpaceX quickly confirmed that safety protocols worked and that emergency crews secured the area
- The explosion took place on June 18 around 11 p.m.
- It occurred at SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas.
- The static fire test ended in an explosion before full engine ignition.
- This test was part of preparations for Starship’s tenth flight.
- SpaceX has faced three other failures with Starship tests this year.
A company representative said, “This was a major anomaly during a planned engine test. We are investigating and working with local authorities. The site is secure and there is no risk to the public.”
So far in 2025, the Starship program has seen repeated setbacks. Test flights 7, 8, and 9 also failed. With this latest issue, plans for the next flight are now delayed again.
SpaceX wants to use Starship to launch people and cargo to the Moon and Mars. For now, engineers will focus on finding out what went wrong and how to move forward.
