Former President Joe Biden will travel to Galveston this Thursday June 19 to take part in this year’s Juneteenth events. He plans to walk in the Emancipation March and attend a service at Reedy Chapel AME Church. Built during the Civil War, the church became one of the first places in Texas where Union troops read General Order No. 3, informing enslaved people they were free.

Local officials have already confirmed his visit. Galveston County Sheriff Jimmy Fullen said the city will close roads near Broadway Avenue from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. to secure the area and allow the events to run safely.

Juneteenth marks a major moment in American history. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston and announced the end of slavery—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. In 2021, Biden signed the law making Juneteenth a federal holiday

This will be Biden’s first public appearance at a Juneteenth event since leaving office. It follows his recent announcement that he is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. He began oral therapy in late May and has continued making public appearances, including attending his grandson’s graduation.
