Their Woodstock performance in August 1969 remains one of the festival’s most talked-about moments. Stone’s path later took a darker turn with drug issues that lasted decades. He was arrested in 1983 and later entered rehab. In 2019, he gave up drugs for good. His 2023 memoir and 2025 documentary, Sly Lives!, revisited his journey. He also completed a screenplay just before his death.
“After a prolonged battle with COPD and other underlying health issues, Sly passed away peacefully, surrounded by his three children, his closest friend, and his extended family… While we mourn his absence, we take solace in knowing that his extraordinary musical legacy will continue to resonate and inspire for generations to come,” said his family.
