The israeli Navy interepted an aid boat headed to Gaza in international waters on June 9, 2025. Onboard were 12 activists, including Greta Thunberg and French parliament member Rima Hassan. The boat, Madleen, carried a symbolic load of supplies for Gaza.

The interception happened about 200 kilometers from Gaza. Israel enforced its blockade, towing the ship to Ashdod. All passengers were detained and taken to a facility in Ramle, where they await deportation.

Important facts:

  • Ship: Madleen, UK-registered
  • Detained: June 9, 2025
  • Location: International waters off Gaza
  • Cargo: Rice, baby formula, medicine, flour
  • Status: Detainees held in Ramle

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition called it “an unlawful kidnapping.” Israel rejected this, calling the mission a stunt. Defense Minister Israel Katz said detainees would be shown footage of Hamas’s October 7 attacks and labeled Thunberg “antisemitic.”

International concern grew. France, Sweden, and Spain all called for the detainees’ release. Protesters in Australia took to the streets in support of the mission.

Since 2007, Israel has maintained a naval blockade of Gaza. Recently, it tightened restrictions even further. As a result, more than two million people in Gaza face extreme shortages of food and medicine. Aid groups report that standard delivery routes have collapsed.

With food and supplies running out, Gaza’s humanitarian crisis deepens. Israel’s blockade has severely limited traditional aid routes.
