Longtime Houston Anchor José Griñán Dies at 72

José Griñán, beloved morning news anchor in Houston, has passed away at the age of 72. He worked for 30 years at FOX 26, where he was a steady figure on the air.

Griñan started his media work in the U.S. Army as a documentary cinematographer. Before joining FOX 26 in 1993, he worked in cities such as El Paso, Tampa, Miami, New York, and Dallas

At FOX 26, he became the station’s first male morning anchor and helped cover major news stories like the Branch Davidian siege and multiple hurricanes. He was often seen as a calm voice during times of crisis.

Griñán also gave much of his time to service. He volunteered with the National Kidney Foundation and Special Olympics. Also, he was a board member for the Dive Pirate Foundation and Keep Houston Beautiful. Furthermor, he was a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

In 2022, he was diagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica. He took time off for medical reasons and retired in June 2023. He had also survived a stroke in 2010 and had surgeries in 2014 and 2016.
