Former president Joe Biden visited Reedy Chapel AME Church in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, to commemorate Juneteenth at the site where freedom was first declared for enslaved people in the state. He told the crowd it was “a day of liberation, a day of remembrance and a day of celebration.”

Biden directly addressed attempts to remove slavery and civil rights history from classrooms. He warned against forgetting the past, saying, “Still today, some say to me and you that this doesn’t deserve to be a federal holiday. They don’t want to remember…the moral stain of slavery.”

He also pushed back against proposals to restore military base names that honored Confederate figures. “What are we doing now? Reinstating those names,” he asked.

During his remarks, Biden referred to President Donald Trump without using his name. He said, “This guy,” then made the sign of the cross. The audience responded with laughter.

  • Biden spoke at Reedy Chapel, where Union troops announced the end of slavery in Texas.
  • He warned against erasing slavery and civil rights history from schools.
  • He criticized attempts to reverse changes to military base names.
  • He used humor and symbolism to indirectly criticize Trump
  • Trump did not attend any Juneteenth event and criticized holidays on social media.

Meanwhile, Trump skipped public Juneteenth events and instead posted a complaint on Truth Social. He wrote: “Too many non‑working holidays in America. It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS…The workers don’t want it either! Soon we’ll end up having a holiday for every … working day of the year. It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
