Trump Reinstates and Expands Travel Ban, Affecting 19 Nations

· · ·

President Donald Trump has reinstated a sweeping travel ban affecting nationals from 12 countries, while imposing limited restrictions on seven additional nations. The proclamation, signed on June 4, will take effect at 12:01 a.m. EDT on June 9.

Citing national security concerns, the administration says the measure targets countries with poor identity-management systems, a lack of data sharing, and high visa overstay rates. Officials also referenced the recent Boulder, Colorado, attack involving an Egyptian national as a prompt for tightening entry procedures, though Egypt is not among the affected countries.

In his proclamation, Trump stated, “The restrictions and limitations imposed by this proclamation are, in my judgment, necessary to prevent the entry or admission of foreign nationals about whom the United States Government lacks sufficient information to assess the risks they pose to the United States.”

The ban blocks entry from:

  • Afghanistan
  • Burma (Myanmar)
  • Chad
  • Republic of the Congo
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Eritrea
  • Haiti
  • Iran
  • Libya
  • Somalia
  • Sudan
  • Yemen

Countries facing partial restrictions include:

  • Burundi
  • Cuba
  • Laos
  • Sierra Leone
  • Togo
  • Turkmenistan
  • Venezuel

Exceptions to the ban include U.S. lawful permanent residents, holders of valid visas issued before the proclamation, dual nationals traveling on passports from unrestricted countries, diplomats, Olympic or World Cup athletes and personnel, and certain immediate family members of U.S. citizens. Special Immigrant Visa holders—particularly those who assisted U.S. forces—are also exempt.

Critics argue the policy is discriminatory and echoes the controversial travel bans from Trump’s first term. Legal challenges are expected.
