Nico Harrison Fired by Dallas Mavericks After Tumultuous 2025 Season Start
The Dallas Mavericks have fired Nico Harrison as general manager in November 2025 after a rough 3–8 start and growing fallout from the Luka Dončić trade.
A Promising Start Built on Corporate Success

When the Dallas Mavericks hired Nico Harrison in June 2021, the move drew intrigue across the NBA. A former Nike executive with deep ties to players and global brand strategy, Harrison brought a polished business mindset to the Mavericks’ front office.
His first years went well. Dallas became a consistent playoff team and reached the 2024 NBA Finals, their first appearance since 2011. The achievement earned Harrison a multi-year contract extension and positioned him as one of the league’s rising executives.
But success came with pressure. Behind the scenes, roster depth concerns and long-term planning challenges began to test his leadership heading into 2025.
The Luka Dončić Trade That Sparked Fan Outrage
The real breaking point arrived in February 2025, when Harrison approved a stunning blockbuster deal—sending Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick.
At the time, Harrison defended the decision as a move to “balance the roster and sustain flexibility,” but fans saw it differently. The trade dismantled the core of a Finals-contending team and was met with intense backlash.
According to The Athletic (New York Times), internal disagreements over Dončić’s conditioning and contract length influenced the trade, but the fallout was immediate. Team morale dipped, attendance declined, and frustration grew as Dallas struggled early in the 2025–26 season.
“Fire Nico” Chants and a 3–8 Start
The tension reached a peak during a November 10 home game against the Milwaukee Bucks, when Dallas blew a 13-point lead to lose 116–114. As ESPN reported, chants of “Fire Nico!” echoed throughout the American Airlines Center in the fourth quarterce.
Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont was courtside that night and, according to reports, began discussing leadership changes soon after. The following day November 11, 2025, Harrison was officially dismissed as GM and President of Basketball Operations.
The Dallas Morning News confirmed that assistant GM Michael Finley would take over on an interim basis while the organization searches for a long-term replacement.
The End of a Polarizing Era
Nico Harrison’s story in Dallas reflects both the promise and pitfalls of modern NBA management. He was praised for bridging corporate vision and player relations, yet criticized for underestimating the basketball culture that defined the Mavericks.
Once hailed as the architect of a Finals roster, he now becomes a case study in how quickly fortunes can turn when franchise icons are traded.
