Graffiti Park in Houston Torn Down for I‑45 Expansion

Construction crews have torn down Graffiti Park, a public mural site located at 2011 Leeland Street in East Downtown Houston. The demolition began this June as part of the Texas Department of Transportation’s I‑45 highway expansion.
For over 12 years, local artists transformed the walls into vivid displays of community and culture. They painted portraits of Selena, George Floyd, and Houston rap artists. The site also hosted events and photo shoots, making it a creative landmark. However, TXDOT moved forward with clearing the space to make way for road development.
The removal follows other recent demolitions tied to the same project. Earlier this year, a Third Ward mural featuring names like Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor also came down. These actions have raised concerns about how highway projects affect cultural spaces.
Artist Daniel Anguilu, one of the park’s founders, criticized the lack of planning and communication. He described Graffiti Park as “one of the largest and oldest art initiatives in Houston, purely run from artist to artist.” He added, “unfortunately there is no conversation with us about the future and documentation of a Houston iconic place for creativity.”
Online Reaction
Online reactions reflected public frustration. In a Reddit thread, one user wrote, “This is actually so tragic. A Houston staple.” Another added, “The artwork was amazing. I wish some of it could’ve been preserved.”
