Emoji Day Meets Houston: 7 Local Spots That Deserve Their Own Emoji

· · ·

Every July 17, World Emoji Day gives us a reason to reflect on the little icons we send with just about every message. Emojis are fun, fast, and loaded with meaning—just like some of Houston’s most recognizable landmarks and local favorites. While the Unicode Consortium hasn’t dropped an official “Houston” emoji set (yet), we think these seven spots have earned their own icons.

From local eats to iconic views, here’s a roundup of places in Houston that are so distinct, they could be summarized in one symbol.

Emoji Day Meets Houston

The Houston Rodeo

The city shuts down for this one—almost literally. The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo blends cowboy culture, live music, and fried food into one massive event. A custom emoji with a cowboy hat, a brisket plate, and maybe a Ferris wheel wouldn’t feel out of place.

Winding trails, skyline views, public art, and unexpected bat sightings define this urban escape. It’s where joggers, dog walkers, and cyclists all coexist—sometimes with a taco truck parked nearby. A bike-and-bat hybrid emoji feels oddly fitting.

The Orange Show Monument

This outsider art installation is built from concrete, scrap metal, and a devotion to citrus. It’s quirky, layered, and totally Houston. A funky orange with googly eyes and wheels could sum it up.

Beneath the business district lies a climate-controlled labyrinth full of food courts, barbershops, and dry cleaners. Locals love them, visitors get lost in them. The emoji: a pair of shoes walking under skyscrapers.

NASA Johnson Space Center

This one’s a no-brainer. Houston’s space legacy launched phrases like “Houston, we have a problem” into pop culture. A space helmet or mission control panel emoji would give this landmark the nod it deserves.

Ninfa’s on Navigation

Houston’s taco scene owes a lot to “Mama” Ninfa Laurenzo, who kicked off the fajita trend right here. It’s more than a restaurant—it’s a local institution. Imagine an emoji with a sizzling plate of beef and handmade tortillas.

Beer Can House

Over 50,000 beer cans cover this small home-turned-museum, an artistic tribute to both recycling and Houston’s DIY spirit. The emoji? A crushed can with a chimney.

Houston’s culture is as diverse as the emojis on your keyboard. These seven spots each tell a story that goes beyond location—they represent neighborhoods, values, and memories. While we wait for tech platforms to catch up, maybe start a trend by dropping your own emoji combos when you’re tagging these places online.

Emoji Day or not, Houston’s got plenty of character—and it shows.
