Carlos Correa Returns to Astros in Deadline Trade with Twins

The Houston Astros have officially brought back a familiar face. In a major deadline-day trade on July 31, the team reacquired star infielder Carlos Correa from the Minnesota Twins, marking a significant midseason move as Houston looks to make another postseason run.
The Trade Details
As part of the deal, the Astros are sending minor league left-handed pitcher Matt Mikulski to Minnesota. The Twins have agreed to cover approximately $33 million of the remaining salary on Correa’s long-term contract, helping Houston stay below the competitive balance tax threshold.
Correa is expected to shift to third base, at least temporarily, to accommodate current shortstop Jeremy Peña.
Correa’s History in Houston
Carlos Correa was drafted first overall by the Astros in 2012 and made his MLB debut with the team in 2015. He quickly became a franchise cornerstone, earning Rookie of the Year honors that season and later helping lead the Astros to a World Series title in 2017. He spent seven seasons in Houston before signing with the Twins in 2022.
During his time with the Twins, Correa remained a reliable defensive presence and posted solid offensive numbers. His return to Houston adds experience, leadership, and playoff pedigree to an Astros team still in the thick of the AL postseason race.
What’s Next
Correa is expected to join the team immediately and could be in the lineup as early as this weekend’s series. With a deep roster and a returning fan favorite, the Astros are positioning themselves to stay competitive in the second half of the season.
